Money Saving Tips - Phone and Broadband

Broadband

  • When looking to get the internet consider mobile broadband. It is available from all major mobile phone companies. And can be cheaper than paying for a monthly bill and a landline. With pay as you go the costs vary from £2 a day to £7 a week. And you will only have to pay when you want to use it.
  • Do check with the supplier of your mobile broadband that there is sufficient signal in your area to receive mobile broadband before you commit to anything.
  • Another alternative to getting internet in the home is joining up to your local library - most of which have an internet service. It is free to use and most libraries also offer a printing service for about 10 – 20p per page.
  • If you are looking to buy anti-virus protection for your PC/laptop you do not have to buy a big name brand that will cost money. There are free alternatives available for download that are just as powerful and reliable such as Avast & AVG - and Microsoft do a Security Essentials package.
  • If you are looking to buy office software there are also free alternatives for this. You can download office programs that are just as efficient and powerful as Microsoft Office packages - such as Open Office.

Mobile Phones

  • If you are looking to purchase a phone you could consider using a pay as you go mobile tariff. You can make a one off payment to buy a mobile phone. And then top up your phone with the amount required whenever you wish.
  • Avoid downloading ringtones as these often subscribe you to a club with the first download. And texts they send to you often charge up to £1.50 per message. So read the small print before you accept anything.
  • When sending texts remember that multimedia texts such as photos/videos are often not included in any free text offers your phone company gives you. They also cost at least 10p more to send.
  • Keep texts as short as possible as they charge per page so a ten page text could cost a pound. So keep track of how many texts you send as it can quickly build up.
  • Don’t’ assume you need to spend a lot of money to get a good mobile phone. There are low priced reliable phones that cover all the basic needs you would have - and they’re available from supermarkets and phone shops
