Next Steps to opening a basic bank account
Step 1
Decide which basic bank account would be best for
you. Use the table in w.moneymadeclear.gov.uk/pdf/bankaccounts/pdf
to help you decide.
Step 2
Be ready to prove to the bank or building society that you are
who you say you are. If you have difficulty proving
your identity, the member of staff dealing with your application
can usually refer the matter to someone who is authorised to decide
in exceptional circumstances. Or alternatively you can
contact Marie Flaherty at the Money Matters Team and she will help
you to open a bank account and if necessary she will go along with
you to the bank of your choice.
Step 3
If you want to have your wages, state pension or tax credits
paid directly into your account, talk to your wages office or the
pension or benefit office dealing with your claim.
Step 4
To set up a direct debit or standing order to pay household or
other regular bills, ask the company for a direct debit or standing
order form. Direct debit forms are returned to the
company that you want to pay but you give a standing order form to
your bank.
