RBH Garden Competion
Our tenants are being given the opportunity to flaunt
their flowers again in the search for the best garden in the
borough.
RBH are again launching their Garden
competition and prizes are being awarded for the best garden by an
RBH tenant in each of our housing management areas. Communities
First Coordinator, Ruth Sillence, said: “This is a great way for
tenants to improve their environment and get involved in an
exciting event that brings people together from all walks of
life,”
“We had a record number of entries last year
and the competition was very strong so now is the time to spring
clean your garden after the snowfalls, spruce up your garden boxes
or brighten up a communal area with some colourful flowers and
plants.”
Shortlisted entrants will be invited to a
presentation in the autumn and there will be trophies and prizes
awarded to eventual winners.
“There’s a category to suit everyone,” added
Ruth. “So, get in touch and we’ll send you an entry form.”
The closing date for entries is Friday
22nd June 2012 and the judging will take place the week
commencing the 2nd July. For a competition entry form
tenants should contact Ruth Sillence on 01706 273977 or send an
email to ruth.sillence@rbhousing.org.uk
Site seeing coach trip
Dear Mr Swarbrick
On Thursday 5th May 2011, Mavis
Mash and myself along with colleagues from other sheltered Housing
in the Borough visited several schemes to see how their gardens had
been arranged. The tour was very successfully organised by
Ruth Sillence, the Communities First Co-ordinator, and we all
picked up tips and ideas along with some free plants from generous
tenants.
All the people involved would wish to pass on
our thanks for an enjoyable day and hope this trip will continue in
the future.
Yours Sincerely
Brian Mulligan

Bussing Around the Borough
Nineteen tenants from sheltered housing
schemes across the borough got together for a sight seeing tour of
gardens.
Yet, they weren’t visiting Chelsea or Cornwall
but the bountiful landscapes of RBH sheltered accommodation in the
borough of Rochdale.
The trip, organised by Communities First
Co-ordinator, Ruth Sillence, included stops at Low Bank,
Ryefields, Saxon House, Yew Court, Arnold Bagnall Court, Norman
Weall Court, Springfield Close, Isherwood Close and Moss Row –
sheltered housing schemes in various areas. “We organised the trip
in response to requests made by tenants who wanted to take a look
at the competition for the annual Borough in Bloom contest,” said
Ruth.
After viewing the gardens tenants were able to
take cuttings and ask questions about maintenance.
“Hopefully the cuttings will root and this
will become a cost effective way of cultivating plants to fill all
the gardens,” added Ruth.
RBH tenant and contest judge, Leonie Roberts,
was available to give advice and share information on the judges
criteria for the competition.
But it wasn’t just plants and flowers that
were being cultivated as new friendships were formed and a bird
bath caused such a flap that a new initiative sprung its
roots.
The bath at the Low Bank scheme, made from old tyres, was the
subject of a great deal of interest and a number of tenants
expressed a wish for one at their residence. Ruth has now arranged
for Junior Warden Clubs to make more of them over the summer, which
will then be distributed to the various sheltered housing
schemes.
Tenants were treated to a buffet lunch before
taking the ‘scenic’ route home.
