Everybody needs good neighbours!

Yet another wet bank holiday weekend failed to dampen the spirits of our tenants in Middleton from enjoying themselves and at the same time sprucing up the neighbourhood.

‘Neighbours Day’ was actually a trio of ‘days’ that began on Saturday 29th May and was the brainchild of local tenant, Rachel Lartey, who wanted to get to know her neighbours having recently moved into Dalton Road. Armed with paintbrushes and paint, their shared ambition was to foster community spirit and improve the environment in which they lived by repainting all the external fences.

Communities First Coordinator, Ruth Sillence, said:

“It was amazing to see how many people came out of their houses to join in – teenagers helped those who were less able to move rubbish and paint fences, mums with prams picked litter and men and women helped the caretakers loading the van with rubbish. On bank holiday Monday it was great to see people painting their own or their neighbour’s fence. It has brought the community together.”

Our Customer Involvement Officer, Helen Kelsall, who assisted with the planning and purchasing of equipment, said:

”It was a very successful event despite the weather! As well as all the tidying and painting, the weekend also gave people a real opportunity to meet their neighbours and chat about life on their street.”

Middleton-based caretakers Carl Wild and Ian Lord also rolled up their sleeves to help on the big day.

Prior to the work on the day, our Green Team cleared and planted some shrubs on the land at the end of the street where people regularly fly tip.
And as a thank you participants enjoyed a buffet lunch whilst the children enjoyed being entertained by the clown and took part in colouring competitions.

Although it rained heavily on the day the team carried on regardless with the planned litter pick and removal of rubbish from their gardens.

“The caretakers were fantastic,” said Rachel. “They helped us to erect three gazebo’s to protect the buffet lunch from the rain and made frequent trips to the tip with the rubbish brought out from people’s gardens.”

On Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday when the weather brightened the neighbours came out again and painted the fences, which has given the area a much needed facelift. It is hoped that the weekend’s activities may lead to the formation of a new neighbourhood group in the future.
