RBH Celebrates Cooperative History
After tenants recently voted a resounding ‘yes’ to transfer
housing stock to RBH it paved the way for us become the UK’s
first tenant and employee co-owned mutual landlord.
How exciting then, that this should all take
place in 2012 – the International Year of Co-operatives.
Rochdale, named World Capital of Co-operatives
by the International Co-operative Alliance, marked the start of
this significant year with a ceremony at the Town Hall.
On Thursday 12th January RBH
tenants joined representatives from the Co-operative along with
local Councillors and Cloverhall Tenants Association Co-operative,
which was created in 1984 as the country’s first tenant management
co-operative.
The coming year will see the borough celebrate
its unique role in the Co-operative Movement with everything from
activities symbolising our co-operative heritage and our status as
a Fairtrade Borough through to a summer of sport, music,
entertainment and competitions.
Councillor Colin Lambert, Leader of Rochdale
Borough Council, said: “The International Year of Co-operatives
provides the borough with a wonderful opportunity to showcase
itself around the world and demonstrate how co-operative principles
can transform lives and communities today, just as they did in
1844.
“Projects such as our new housing co-operative
and our efforts to establish co-operative schools in the borough
show that the spirit of the Pioneers continues to drive us forward
as we seek to build a vibrant future for all our
residents.”
