Your guide to the right to buy - What can you buy?

You can buy:
  • Houses for which the council own the freehold or has an interest sufficient to grant a lease for a term exceeding 21 years.
  • Flats for which the landlord owns the freehold or has an interest sufficient to grant a lease of a term of not less than 50 years. (Right to Buy flat sales are normally subject to a lease of 125 years)
You can not buy:
  • Sheltered accommodation
  • Temporary housing
  • 'Tied' accommodation ( e.g. service tenancies)
  • Homes rented from another landlord
  • Accommodation particularly suitable for occupation by people aged 60 and over (e.g. bungalows, although you may challenge a denial of the Right to Buy under this category)
