Domestic violence - Rochdale Safer Home Scheme

This is a new scheme set up by the Council's Homelessness Section that enables victims of Domestic Violence or Hate Crime to stay in their properties. It is a free service and is not means tested and any property will be considered, ower-occupied, Housing Association, Council or Private Tenant (with permission from the landlord).

An initial assessment is arranged with a community safety officer, a person from the Handyperson scheme and either the referring agent or a Prevention Oficer attending. Most work is carried out in about a week (electrical work takes longer).

The scheme offers a wide range of security measures including:

  • door and window locks
  • chains
  • spyholes
  • glass alarms
  • security lights
  • video entry systems

As well as the work that takes place, the property can be 'flagged' by the police, resulting in a quicker response time to any 999 calls from the address. Follow on support is also offered through Domestic Violence Resettlement Workers.

If you would like to make a referral or would like more details about the scheme, please contact Sean Landsborough, Homelessness Prevention Officer on (01706) 864108
