Creating Great Neighbourhoods

Tenant Representatives

Environmental Schemes - Quick Wins

Priority Estates

Rochdale Council and Rochdale Boroughwide Housing are investing up to £9,500,000 over the next four years on improving the environments on its estates in a project named “Creating Great Neighbourhoods”.

In order to make our estates safer, more secure, more attractive and better places to live we are looking at a variety of projects, some small-scale and others on a very much larger scale which will provide better quality fencing, lighting, landscaping, pathways, landscaping, play facilities, gardens, courtyards, play facilities and lobby areas – to name but a few.

Environmental Schemes - Quick Wins

“Quick Wins” Schemes – Each Township Area has a designated budget to carry out some smaller scale environmental schemes probably costing not very much but designed to make a big impact.

Several such schemes have already been undertaken and have included fencing works to small numbers of dwellings, improving lighting at specific locations, landscaping small parcels of land, upgrading paths, replacing play equipment & providing improved parking facilities. Your local housing team is compiling lists of such schemes and they will be presented to the quarterly Area Panels for approval.

Roch Mill Crescent, Brimrod

The scheme involved providing 2.0m high timber close board fencing to the rears of 10 council dwellings whose rears were adjacent to open land & whose boundaries were in very poor condition. The completed project has drastically improved security & the overall appearance of the area.

Yew Dale Gardens, Meadway Estate

Replaced the kerb & bitmac the edge of the central grassed area to deter vehicles from parking over the edge of the grass and also to improve the area visually.

10 - 28 Lyefield Walk
Before:- The ten gardens to the front of these properties were unkempt and in poor condition.  They looked very uninviting.
After:- All the garden areas were flagged in concrete paving.  The gardens now look in better condition and are much easier to maintain.

Falinge Hill

After:- It would have been easy to get lost around this area of Falinge as previously the signage was very poor and could be confusing because some ground floors could be on one street whilst the first floor would be on another.  The new steel signs that have been affixed to the side of the flats alleviate this problem because they are clear, brighter and easier to read.

Chesham Avenue, Chesham Estate, Rochdale

At this site we created an informal footpath leading to the front of the building housing the Tenants and Residents Association. In addition, four bollards were fitted to the existing footway to discourage people from parking their car on the verge. A small section of the roadway has also been refurbished.

Patterdale Close, Meadway Estate

Two dropped kerbs were installed here to enable residents with motorised scooters to access their bungalows more easily from the road.

Priority Estates

A short while ago, RBH and the Council produced a report looking at all aspects of the external environment of all of its estates. This Environmental Audit led to the designation of a number of Priority Estates where it was felt additional investment would be required to carry out some larger scale projects. Each Township has a number of Priority Estates as below:

    • Rochdale North – Falinge Hill, Lower Falinge, Holstein & Spotland and Hamer
    • Rochdale South – Kirklee, Long Hill, Channing Street & Chesham
    • Pennines – Pennine View, Bramhall Close, Bishop Street & Ashbrook Hey
    • Heywood – Heap Bridge, Heady Hill, Hopwood & Pot Hall
    • Middleton – Hollin, Baytree, Middleton Junction & Brookside

Here, further detailed studies of the estates are being undertaken to assess further what type of work is required to improve them and detailed consultation  with affected stakeholders has begun on some of these estates with a view to works starting on them in 2009

All of these schemes are brought before a Steering Group made up of RBH tenants and they rigorously assess them to ensure that we end up with the best design at the best price. These representatives are Joan Turner (Rochdale North), Debbie Lord (Rochdale South), Keith Barker (Pennines), Roy Thompson (Middleton) and Mary Diedo-Rayner (Heywood).

For further details of the environmental improvement schemes please contact either your local housing office or Paul Dockerty, the Environmental Improvement Programme Co-ordinator on (01706) 516650.
