Townships in Bloom - Best Garden by a Council Tenant This is the second year we have joined the Council's "Townships in Bloom" competition, having introduced the new category of 'best garden by a Council tenant' last year. The competition is a great way to recognise the efforts of individuals whose passion for plants and gardening really makes a difference by brightening up their local communities. Andrew Toft (RBH Operations Director) presented the awards, saying “I would like to thank everyone who entered this year and to the panel of tenant judges. The judges told me that many of the entrants were keen to attract wildlife into their gardens with bird feeders, nesting boxes and selecting plants that are particularly attractive to e.g. butterflies, ladybirds etc. The environment is an important issue and lots of the gardeners used compost bins and the judges saw some ingenious examples of recycling such as using an batkroom cabinet to make a fabulous planter. They also heard stories of neighbours and friends swapping cuttings and plants to boost their gardens without the expense of buying new plants”. Congratulations to all our winners and also to Dorothy Robinson and Yew Court Residents, both from Rochdale North, whose gardens were highly commended. Residents from Isherwood Close in Heywood, Arnold Bagnall Court in Rochdale South and Hare Hill Court in Pennines who won awards in the Council’s ‘Community Garden’ category. The winners were:
Rochdale North – Jack Holroyd from Syke
Heywood: Springfield Close Rochdale South: Derrick Walker Court
Middleton: Baytree Residents
Pennines: Saxon House and West View
